In Goma, D.R. Congo, Vanguard has seen a real move of the Sovereign Spirit of God in recent years. This field has been very challenging, as it has been racked by civil war and nearby militia conflict for several years. There have even been conflicts with U.N. Peacekeepers here. The economy of the country has been decimated, with only 8% employment.
At their invitation, Vanguard began Discipleship Introduction training in Goma in 2007, followed up by Discipleship Implementation training with about 100 pastors and their wives from a wide denominational background in 2008, with coaching in Discipleship in 2008-09. Later in 2009, we conducted Leadership and Evangelism training there.
In the last year since the Evangelism training, more than 1903 people have come to faith in Christ, and who have been baptized and have become members the AEEC churches. This includes 25 in the Pastors and Wives group who came to saving faith the year before. With these 1300+ new believers come many challenges (literacy, Bible distribution, etc.), but we know "great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and His greatness is unsearchable" (Psalm 145:3), so He will help them and us to conquer these challenges.
The pastors have said that they have come to a whole new way of doing things since the training began, and are finding His increasing effectiveness in their ministries.
PRAY that this precious field stays open, that many more come to faith as these new Christians share their testimony, that this would result in more disciples trained and mobilized to serve their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
