What is it supposed to mean?” The answer comes from the idea behind the Hebrew text of Isaiah 52:12: “But you will not leave in haste or go in flight; for the LORD will go before you as a Vanguard, the God of Israel will be your Rear Guard”. In other words, God would advance before them to conquer their enemies, and stay behind them to protect them, so they didn’t need to flee or hurry up. God was out front and in control. We believe those are our marching orders as well, that God goes before us to spearhead the advance of His church, that He fights the spiritual battles, that He conquers new territory, that He gets the victory, and we simply need to abide with Him in the center of His will, and prayerfully work with the knowledge that the triumph is His as He goes before us. So we move ahead because HE’S moving ahead! We also want Vanguard to be at the front, with God, going first into the need, to tip the balance of power in the church’s favor around the world in the global advance of the gospel.
