The DRC is vital because it borders 9 nations and controls Africa's stability. "As Congo goes, so goes Africa".
Vanguard first went to DRC in October, 1999, to meet with Congolese pastors and leaders to organize Pastoral Training Seminars. However, we had recurring problems getting back in the country. Finally in 2007, we conducted two D/1 trainings Bukavu and Goma) and one Discipleship Implementation in Bukavu. These were well attended and went very well on the whole. A total of about 420 pastors and leaders attended. Some of these were pastors of churches of 700, so the possibility of application is enormous. Our big problem there, as in other African countries, is the scarcity of Bibles. It's hard to train disciples without access to the Word of God. Often the pastors themselves don't have them and can't afford them. There is virtually no economy in the DRC, excepting local food markets and some shops. The OECD cites the unemployment rate is "very high" and notes that only 4% of the total working population and 8% of the male working population had jobs in 2002. The vast majority of the people live on less than $1 a day. So asking them to pay for pastoral training in any form is virtually impossible. Ours is the only training most of them will ever receive, in any form.
Vanguard's work is in two cities, Bukavu and Goma. We've had Discipleship Training Seminars in both places, and have done life-to-life discipleship mentoring for their pastors. The Bukavu conferences hosted pastors from all over Congo, including Kinshasa and the western cities. We work with CEPAC (Communaute des Eglises de Pentecote en Afrique Centrale). by far the largest denomination in DRC, and the Alliance Ecoles Evangelique du Congo. A recent letter from Pastor Israel Ngirababo, leader of AEEC, talked about what God had done there in the previous 5 months after the training:
"Vanguard Global Network helped the ministers here to grow spiritually and in the way of doing things. Even the different churches are growing in the way we could not think. We had already, after those teachings, baptized 1903+ new members and next week three other churches will baptize also, and number of new members is going, growing".
